- Huckleberry goes home to find his dad

- Huckleberry's dad tries to take his money but the judge won't allow it the judge.

- Huckleberry's dad gets drunk and ends up in jail for a week

What time period was it?

It takes place along the Mississippi river during the 1830- 1840's  because Ms. Watson had slaves. I know this because slavery wouldn't end until after the civil war which ended on May 9, 1865. Also the language of the book seems as it was okay to say those words and call others those names because they weren't as high of class as others were.

How does the perspective change?

This book is written in the perspective of Huckleberry this is also called first person. I think that everything is a little different how it actually happened because it's told from a 12 year old boys perspective and has a little more exaggeration because of this. I think that Huckleberry is telling the story the way he sees and tries to be truthful but doesn't really see other peoples perspectives. Overall I think that he gets the main points but leaves out some of the little mistakes he may have made in the situation.

Chapters 6-11

1)Why does Pap lock Huckleberry up?

Pap locks Huckleberry up because he wants his money but Judge Thatcher won't allow it so pap tries to sue Judge Thatcher for Huckleberry's fortune and continues to threaten Huckleberry's about attending school.

2) Create a visual of how Huckleberry escapes the shanty?

IMG_0891.JPG

3) What is an abolitionist and why is huckleberry concerned to be called one?

An abolitionist is people who want to end slavery. Abolitionism was the act and effort to try to end slavery and set them free. Huckleberry is concerned to be called one because since slaves were allowed during the 1800's many people had slaves. Jim was Ms. Watson's slave and if people saw Huckleberry with Jim people would suspect that Huckleberry was trying to set Jim free from slavery.

4) Things that Huckleberry gave away pretending to be a girl?

- Forgot his name

- Throws a piece of lead at the rat and almost hits it

- Couldn't thread a needle

Modern Times (Boys)

- There voice and language they use

- The way they do things (Throwing a football, The way they write, etc)

- The things that they talk about (Sports, Fortnite, Cars, etc)

Modern Times (Girls)

- There voice and language they use.

- How they sit

- Sensitivity to things (To a pinch, or a emotional topic for them)

Chapters 12-16

1) What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret that story?

The story of King Solomon is when two woman came to him with a child both of the woman claimed to be the mother. To find out who the real mother was King Solomon suggested that they cut the child in half. He knew that the real mother rather give up her son than be killed. Jim sees the story as being stupid because he doesn't think the king would cut his son in half and kill him.

2) When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim’s reaction to Huck tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this point?

When Jim wakes up he think that huckleberry is dead. Yet Huckleberry is just fine he just wanted to play a joke on Jim. This showed that Jim really cared for Huckleberry because he was so worried when he couldn't find him. Mean while Jim is kind of hurt that Huckleberry doesn't feel the same way and cares for Jim as he cares for Huckleberry. I think that Jim is a very thoughtful kind person who see's Huckleberry is a really good friend.

3) Jim is very superstitious. From a historical. standpoint why do you think this is?

Jim is superstitious because is an African American man who use to be a slave. Jim at this time was probably scared that if he does something wrong he could end up in a worst spot than he was. I also think that others have influenced him and talked to him about good luck, and myths.

4) It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself a nigger- but I done it, and I warn't sorry for it. What does this line tell us about huck?

This line shows that Huckleberry does care for Jim by apologizing to him. Back then white people wouldn't apologize to African American people. When Huckleberry apologizes to Jim and doesn't regret it this is a big deal that Huckleberry could build of the courage and its humbling himself in the process yet he's only saying it to Jim he is standing up to society and doing the kind thing.

5) At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he had with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves.

Huckleberry is an internal battle on whether he should rat out Jim or not because on one side he's really close to Jim and is really good friends with him. Plus he also knows if Jim were in his situation he wouldn't rat out Huckleberry. On the other hand if he gets caught with Jim he could be called an abolitionist. Also Jim is a rightful slave to Ms.Watson and Ms.Watson has done so much for Jim he doesn't want to do her wrong either. When Huckleberry comes upon some men in a boat who want to search his raft for escaped slaves. Huck pretends to be grateful, saying no one else would help them. He explained to the men that his family is on board the raft and is suffering from smallpox. The men back away in fear of getting the sickness themselves tell Huckleberry to go further downstream to get help and leave Huckleberry 40 dollars in gold.

Chapters 17-21

1) Describe the Grangerford family

The Grangerford family is your typical southern family back then. They were very wealthy, had servants to do there chores and hard work for them. With all these things they do have they do still fear one thing. For 30 years the Grangerford family has been in a battle with another family named the Shepherdson's. Each family wants to kill each other one by one until one family is left standing.

2) Mark Twain alludes that the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdson's is about traditional feuds between farmer (“granger”) and rancher (“shepherd”). Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time (Chapter 18)?

I believe that mark twain wrote this in the book because family's that were a lot a like couldn't get along because of there slim differences and there rich snotty personalities. The difference between a rancher and farmer is practically nothing they basically do the same thing. This shows that if the two familys the Grangerfords and Shepherdson's were self-absorbed and spoiled rich people who thought they were better than others.

3) Toward the end of chapter 18 Huck says “I don’t want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I’ll cut it pretty short.” Huck says this prior to telling us about the big battle. How does our narrator’s perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section (Chapter 18)?

I think that Huckleberry says this because he had is own perspective about the situation and something happened to influence him when he was younger. With him seeing the two family's trying to kill each other he was upset about it and didn't like it because he thought that they had everything and there was no reason to attack each other. They had the money, the houses, servants and huckleberry didn't see the reason for all the chaos and commotion.

4) Explain who the King and the Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story (Chapter 19)?

The King and the Duke are people who try to trick people to give them money and jewels. They go around telling people this to try and get richer and wealthier each time. When they enter the raft the younger man declares himself an impoverished English duke and gets Huckleberry and Jim to treat him like royalty. The older man reveals his true identity as the dauphin, the long lost son of King Louis of France. Huckleberry and Jim then start to call them the Duke and your majesty. Huckleberry knows that there lying but decides to go along with there story, he makes sure the two men don't know that he knows that they aren't the duke and the king.

5) What problems do you anticipate with the Duke’s solution to how they can all run the raft during the day (Chapter 20)?

When the duke and king take over the boat they must come up with a solution to hide Jim during the day. The duke comes up with a solution that was if someone sees them they will tell them that the found this slave who escaped and were taking him back to his owner. The duke think this solution will work and allow them to travel by day. I think that if another boat sees them that they will tell other people and the word will start to spread that there's a missing slave and then the supposedly duke and king will be caught still having Jim with them and would get them in huge trouble.

6) Illustrate the town that the play will be held in (Chapter 21).

Chapters 22-26

1) At the very end of chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the duke will pass out. The duke says “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansaw!” Why would the line at the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?

Arkansas is part of the southern states as we know slavery was allowed in the southern states. Also during this time of slaves woman were not allowed to vote. He said the line “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansaw!” They only said that men could come because if they said woman could come it would not change anything men would still be superior. However the reason behind saying that only men could come would allow them to see who actually thinks this way and believes this way.

2) Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line: “What was the use to tell Jim these warn’t real kings and dukes? It wouldn’t a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said; you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.”

a. Huck decides not to tell Jim that it isn't the real king and duke because Jim wouldn't understand and would get confused which Huck doesn't want to do to Jim. Also if Huck did tell Jim that there not the real King and Duke Jim wouldn't understand why the reason he's playing along with it which is to protect Jim and himself from being caught.

b. Huck says the line "you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.” because if you don't know how a King and Duke actually act and the things that they do you would have no reason to not believe that they are the real King and Duke. Jim doesn't really know what they are therefore Huck just lets him keep on believing there the real King and Duke.

3) The final line in chapter 24 reads: “It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.” What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us (the reader) about Huck that he feels this way?

Huck says “It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.” because in the book they take advantage of three woman whos father has just died to try to get money, wealth and land. What Huck means in this line is they are greedy disgraceful people because of the way they take advantage of people and steal things from people, lie and cheat people. It shouldn't be accepted or allowed and shows badly on what is going on in the human race at that time.

4) In chapter 25 we meet the doctor. How does the doctor know that the king and the duke are a fraud?

The doctor knows that the two men are frauds because of there awful british accents. The doctor says it was the worst accent he has ever heard. He also knew the real King and Duke that the two men were trying to act as. Lastly they didn't know anything about the real King or Duke.

5) The king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money (chapter 26). Why don’t they?

The King and Duke were going to leave in the middle of the night with the $6,000. Instead the King comes up with a plan to wait until they sell the land and slaves so they can steal even more money.

Chapter 27-30

1.Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? (Chapter 27)

People would stay up and guard the dead this was a respect thing. The guard would stay there to protect the body and made sure no one disruptive. The family members also didn't want it to be stolen, eaten by insects or rodants. This allowed the body to rest in peace and was a respectful thing to do.

2.What do we learn (or reaffirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? (Chapter 28) What we reaffirm about Huck is that he has a good heart and is a genuine good person. Huck saw that Mary Jane was upset to find out about the slaves families being separated and about the death. When Huck sees Miss Mary Jane crying he tries to make her feel better and tells her the slaves wouldn't be separated from their families for long. This shows the good hearted side of Huck and how he cares for Miss Mary Jane

3.What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? (Chapter 29)

The first method that they used was they asked the brothers what tattoo on Harvey's brothers chest. The second method they used was they had each one of the brothers write a few sentences on a piece of paper and  compared the hand writing to the letters.

Chapter 31-35

1. Huck says “You can’t pray a lie.” What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean? (Chapter 31)

I think that Huck is asking for forgiveness because he helped Jim escape from Ms. Watson. This is a big deal during this time period because slavery was legal. Huck found out that Jim was sold into slavery. He decides he needs to tell Ms. Watson what has happened. I think what he means when he says you can't pray a lie is he feels bad about the situation. Huck knows that he has messed up and is asking for help and forgiveness.

2.Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? (Chapter 31)

In chapter 31 Huck decided to write a letter to Miss Watson to tell her about his and Jim's Journey. While he writes the letter and remembers how close him and Jim had gotten. He decides to protect Jim and ripped up the letter so that Ms. Watson would never find out where Jim has gone. He will always have a tight bond with Jim and doesn't see the point in ratting him out.

3. Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!” What do you think of this? (Chapter 33)

I believe that Huck didn't think that Tom would help him steal Jim out of slavery because Tom was the original one who created the gang and wanted to steal things and kill innocent people. When Huck finds out that Tom is going to help him he is very shocked and surprised because of Tom's past experiences.  In the past if someone would have asked Tom to help him out he would have mostly likely said no.  I think that Huck is very appreciative that he has another person standing with him on this and helping him on this adventure with Jim.

4. Huck says two things at the end of chapter 33:
1.“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”
2.“But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway.”

What does Huck mean by these two statements?

I think that what Huck is trying to say in the first quote is that since this is a time when owning slaves were legal. Slave owners and whites were treating African Americans cruel and mean to them because of there skin color and Huck does not approve of that since his and Jim's bond has grown tremendously. In the second quote because of slaves and African Americans being miss treated he's trying to say we might look different on the outside but were all human beings and are a like on the inside. I think this way because Huck has seen that Jim has been poorly treated and Huck is very close with Jim

5.Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? (Chapter 34)

They chose to make the plan more difficult because Tom thought that Huck's plan was much too simple. Tom wanted to add falre and style to there escape and thinks that Huck is much to simple. Also Tom doesn't want to take any risks and wants to make sure that the three of them get out safely. Lastly  I think that they wanted to make the escape mysterious and have people question on what they did and how they got out.

Chapters 36-40

1) In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom’s motivation? What is Huck’s motivation? (Why are they doing it?)

Tom and Huck had very different opinions when they were trying to break Jim out because Tom wanted to have the craziest escape ever. Tom wants everybody to know about it and go into the history books. Huck on the other hand just wants to get Jim out he doesn't care how they do it. Huck feels bad about what happened to Jim and is going to try to do anything to get him back.

2) What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they “let on” about something? Why do they do this? (Begins on chapter 37)

Tom and Huck decide to make a rope out of Jim's bedding. At the beginning of the paragraph is says, "we let on it took nine months to make it." He says this because he wanted to make it look like to took nine months to make the rope. Whenever they use the words "let on" they mean they are pretending to do something to fake someone out.

3)  Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle’s slave? What are his motivations for this? (Chapter 39)

Tom is writing these letters so Uncle Silas does not advertise he has captured Jim the runaway slave in the newspapers  because Miss Watson could potentially see them and be very mad and disappointed. He doesn't want Jim to be captured again so he makes it so that his Uncle won't post the ad. Huck's motivation for this is to keep him and Jim safe from miss Watson finding out. Also Huck doesn't want to lose Jim because of how close the two have grown together.

4) We’ve worked a great deal on this novel’s satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim’s escape by Tom and Huck satire?
I think the reason it is satire is because it is making fun of how much extra we do just to please people and be cool. In the book Tom wants to do a crazy unnecessary plan to make it look cool yet there were much simpler and easier ways to free Jim. This is true in life people do a lot more to try to look cool than just being themselves. I believe this is satire because it's making fun of the extra things to try to be cool.

5) Towards the end of the chapter Huck says “I knowed he was white inside” about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean?
When they got on the boat Jim was refusing to let the boat take off because he wasted to get a doctor for Tom. Jim knew that Tom would do the same thing for him and he wanted to repay the kindness back to him. This put the whole group in danger of being caught and after a while Huck says, “I knowed he was white inside,” this statement means that Huck saw that Jim had a good heart and was trying to do the right thing. Most slaves during this time would not risk there freedom.

Chapters 41-End

1) Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way?

I believe that Huck feels guilty because she thinks that he lost Tom and he feels bad because he knew he was still alive and also because he helped  Jim escape. He can't  look her in her face because he is afraid he will tell her everything that happened on their journey. Sally showed and a lot of care and worry for Huck and Tom. Huck feels horrible about lying to somebody who has done nothing wrong.

2) In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?

Jim is a very loyal and kind person. This showed through when Tom was shot and injured badly. Jim did not leave his side, and refused to let him die. He was willing to lose everything for Tom. This was huge because Jim was still a slave he could have lost his freedom while waiting for the doctor. Jim was not going to let Tom die and was going to do every thing in his power to fulfill that.

3) What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)?
Tom seems to very selfish and only cares about himself and nobody else. He knew that Jim was already to be set free and Miss Watson had passed, but he kept it to himself so he could have a quick thrill. Tom never cared about Jim like he did Tom he just wanted to be known for his flare and coolness. Tom is very selfish and always wants the attention to be about himself Tom does whatever he wants whenever he wants.

4)You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck?

I think Huck is a very strong courageous kid that has been through many struggles through his short life. He was raised with an abusive father who got drunk all the time and only cared about money. He doesn't care that others view African American people as being different and accepts Jim and cares for Jim throughout the book. Huck will never settle for example when Jim was captured he could have gave up but he helped Jim escape. Huck has overcome many struggles and that what makes him the character he is.
