Time Line

Before Civil Rights Act:

-1861: Civil war starts

-1865: 13th amendment passed abolishing slavery

-1868: 14th amendment passed guaranteeing equal protection to all citizens

-1896: Plessy vs Ferguson approved laws requiring racial segregation

-1942: Roosevelt issues relocation of Japanese Americans from west coast 

During Civil Rights Act:

-1954: Brown vs board of education ended legal racial segregation in public schools

-1955: Montgomery bus boycott Rosa parks refuses to move to back of the bus

-1957: Little Rock nine governor Orval Faubus doesn't let African American students attend central high school

-1962: Bailey vs Patterson Declares that segregation in transportation is unconstitutional

-1963: March on Washington Martin Luther King Jr gives his I have a dream speech

-1964: Jim Crow Laws are abolished segregation in  public places are illegal

-1968: Martin Luther King Jr assassinated

After Civil Rights Act to present day

-1971: Equal rights amendment passed in congress to give equality to all

-Present: Black Lives Matter
